Sweet felted wool dog toy

My sister just adopted a new puppy and with Christmas right around the corner I had to think fast! Naturally I wanted to give her new baby a chew toy (because that’s what puppies do) but the thought of just going to the pet store for one didn’t appeal to me.

Since felted wool is my quick go-to for satisfying craft projects, I decided it would be best for putting a gift in the mail fast and make a cute toy. Within an hour I cut and sewed this sweet thing and had it ready in time for Tim (the mailman) to pick up. Now as long as Cate doesn’t see this post before Christmas, I will be all set!

DIY 341: Fall for felt acorns

A year ago, my fab sister sent me a felted acorn as a talisman for a new adventure on which I was about to embark. So charmed by the token, I have made several for friends as gifts since then. This Friday I say good-bye to a treasured friend who is moving in a new direction, and I will give her one. Since I was at it, I thought I’d document the making since it is so easy. Here’s how it’s done:

Ball up some felt about the size of the nut removed from the cap

Drop a bit of craft glue in the cap and stuff the felt ball into it

Using a felting needle against a thick (clean) sponge, start to jab at the felt to form a tight ball

Keep poking at it to sculpt the felt — reduce the size and increase compactness

Glue and tie to the stem a pretty ribbon for hanging. Mine dangles form my rear view mirror and reminds me of my sister every day.

Finger puppets! (A team building exercise)

I ran a team building exercise at work where we all threw our names in a bowl and picked out someone else’s name. Then, we reincarnated each other in the form of a finger puppet. Being the creative group we are, we came up with some charming and hilarious interpretations. It was fun to take a break from the day now and again. In all, the project spanned several days when we had time to craft. It broke up the stress of end-of-year deadlines and unified our otherwise project-oriented (and separated) group.

The basics for this craft:

  1. buy inexpensive knit gloves (these are from Target) in various colors.
  2. cut off the fingers and discard the hand
  3. wrap, glue and sew on cloth, buttons, beads and ribbon. Anything really.
  4. Have fun!

brooklyn:discovered

On a recent trip to New York I was surprised to discover… not much. Now let me say before y’all get on me about not looking hard enough, that I go to New York to discover indie brands and crafters gone start-up. In Manhattan I was hard pressed to find the usual funky shops filled with hand-made goodies found nowhere else in the country. I wanted to see what the hipsters were up to, and while there were plenty of them hanging out and walking around, none seemed to be keeping shop in the city. After three days of scouring Soho, the Warehouse district, Chelsea, the West Village and everything in-between, I stopped a totally adorable 20-something who I secretly wanted to be and asked her where she shops. After explaining to me that no one can afford the rent in the city anymore, the place to find the goods is now out Brooklyn way. So, I hopped the next train under the East River to Brooklyn Flea, this awesome craft fair (pictured above and below) is held every Saturday at the corner of Lafayette and Vanderbilt Avenues.

I bought a bracelet made out of a old record album that was spraypainted and screenprinted (pic to come!), a few ceramics and a woven blanket. I was able to get most of my Christmas shopping done in one day too. After stocking up on crafts, I ran over to Grand Street (in Williamsburg, Brooklyn) to a shop called Bird.

Now we’re talking! This is what I came across the country to find: Groovy clothing, sweet shoes (check out that one on the table!) and great design everywhere you turn. I was charmed by the sign overhead, the little details including fun paper masks and scarves I couldn’t live without. Inside and out, this place is my new fav. Walking around more I discovered life:curated (another favorite!) where I bought the coolest tea towels, a fine cashmere wrap on sale, and several gorgeous letterpress cards. By this time we were hungry and thristy ~ time for dinner…

Friends who recently moved to Brooklyn met us out at Calexico, a quick cab ride from Grand Street. The place was packed and for good reason. This modern taqueria serves fresh food, tasty margs and stocks a cool bunch of peeps. We sat at a large table near the window and enjoyed the last few hours of a great day of discovery.
